An 18th century Louis XV style canape or settee, the shaped seat over cabriole legs. The rounded back, en gondole, ends in deep scrolls at the arms.. This simple and elegant form reflects the transition from the rococo era to the neoclassical; the heavy, opulent elements of the rococo style presented in a lithe and tailored way. This piece was likely originally gilded or painted, as can be seem by the white gesso present in the deeper lines of carving. Now stripped and polished, the wood is a light, luminous hue.
