A small oil on board painting, in a period frame, of figures in front of a walled city. The polychrome frame is deeply stepped and molded, carved with gadrooning and simple acanthus leaves. The painting includes several figures standing in front of a drawbridge, one of the figures in the foreground holding an infant. The costumes are styles from about the late sixteenth century, see "Costume and Fashion", Laver, p. 95. The painted panel is split; the color of the oil paint remains vivid.
