A Baroque embossed four-panel leather screen, decorated with exotic birds, flowers, masks as fountain spouts, and a really cute squirrel. Panels are presented on a 20c black wood frame.

European embossed and painted leather, also know as cuir do Cordoue, originated in North Africa and was introduced to Spain, and then other parts of Europe, beginning as early as the 9th century. Patterns for cuir de Cordoue followed fashions in silk damask, and the colorful leather was used commonly as wall hangings. This screen likely originates from Avignon, where decorative leather was produced beginning in the very early 1600s.
